Officers say the variety of deaths has risen to 6 from a sequence of fiery chain-reaction crashes involving dozens of autos in southeast Missouri on a fog-covered interstate

The Mississippi County coroner confirmed a sixth demise in a single day, following the report Thursday of 5 deaths and lots of accidents within the pileups, Missouri State Freeway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder stated.

The collisions started about 8 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 57 as thick fog enveloped the Charleston space, about 150 miles (241 kilometers) south of St. Louis. The primary pileup began within the southbound lanes, “then migrated to the northbound lanes,” Kinder stated, snaring 47 autos — together with a number of semitrailers — within the wreckage.

“It was a horrific scene,” Kinder stated. “The wreckage space itself was a half-a-mile lengthy.”

The interstate was closed for about 25 miles (40 kilometers) in each instructions in Mississippi County from the Missouri-Illinois border to Sikeston, Missouri. The interstate reopened about 4:30 a.m. Friday, Kinder stated.

The names of those that died have been anticipated to be launched later Friday, Kinder stated.
