A analysis workforce, working with Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future (SAEF), is amassing samples of lake mud, glacial rocks and seashore sand in a bid to know the glacier’s behaviour over 1000’s of years.
“Denman Glacier is without doubt one of the largest and most weak glaciers in East Antarctica,” SAEF glaciologist Dr Richard Jones stated.
“It has retreated over 5 kilometres in latest a long time however we don’t know if that’s regular or the beginning of a worrying new development.
“The rocks file ice thickening and thinning and the lake mud and seashores file native sea stage rise and fall in response to the ice rising and shrinking.
“We’re making an attempt to estimate how the glacier modified previous to the 20th Century. Was it retreating, secure, and even advancing?”
