Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh has lashed out at No campaigners after a clip from his movie Seven Psychopaths featured in social media posts forward of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum.
Main No marketing campaign group Truthful Australia shared the clip on social media with a picture of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese superimposed over the face of the character Paulo, performed by Zeljko Ivanek.
Albanese was depicted carrying a Sure badge within the doctored clip, by which Paulo threatens the character Hans – performed by Christopher Walken – with a gun and asks him to place his palms up.
Hans refuses to take action regardless of the weapon.
The Truthful Australia social media put up was accompanied by the message: “Do not allow them to bully you. Vote NO to the Voice of Division.”
McDonagh informed Guardian Australia he wasn’t conscious the clip was used within the ‘no’ marketing campaign and the posts seemed to be “deliberate copyright infringement by a bunch of rightwing swine”.
The British-Irish playwright and filmmaker mentioned he stood with First Nations folks and his brokers and producer would ask Truthful Australia to desist.
