All Stations Operations Activities – Australian Antarctic Program (News 2024)

The Australian Authorities is dedicated to main the way in which in Antarctic environmental safety.

We attempt to constantly enhance our environmental stewardship and minimise the environmental impacts of our operations. As such, and in accordance with our worldwide obligations below the Antarctic Treaty system and Australian legislation, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is assessing the environmental impacts of our Antarctic stations’ operations.

The AAD has ready a draft Preliminary Environmental Analysis (IEE) to evaluate potential environmental impacts related to the operational actions at Australia’s Antarctic stations – Davis, Casey and Mawson. The draft IEE offers particulars on the actions presently undertaken at every station and the potential impression of those actions on the Antarctic surroundings.

The Australian Antarctic Division invitations members of the general public to submit feedback on the draft IEE doc.

Please notice:

• Feedback ought to deal with potential environmental impacts of present and future station operations, and the administration, mitigation and monitoring of those impacts. 
• The draft IEE describes operational actions presently undertaken at every station. Historic impacts of the unique building and previous operation of stations aren’t a part of this evaluation.
• Environmental impacts of Antarctic science, non-station logistics (reminiscent of transport and flights), and any main new building initiatives are topic to separate environmental assessments and approvals processes.
• Australia’s station on subantarctic Macquarie Island can also be excluded from this evaluation, as Macquarie Island is a Tasmanian state authorities duty.
