A crew of Australian scientists aided by some microscopic allies are persevering with a clean-up blitz on historic gas spills in Antarctica.

This summer time marks 11 years because the mission started to remediate contaminated soil at Casey analysis station.

To the untrained eye, biopiles merely appear like large mounds of filth, however beneath the floor a brigade of native Antarctic micro organism feast on gas.

The method could be gradual going because the ‘bugs’ will solely discover their urge for food over summer time as soon as the soil of the biopile is given a stir.

Area challenge chief Dr Rebecca McWatters and her crew arrived at Casey on the finish of 2021 to wake the microorganisms up for dinner.

“At Casey analysis station we’ve had quite a lot of legacy gas spills in addition to trendy gas spills,” Dr McWatters stated.

“This season one in all our main duties is to excavate a former gas storage website. In an effort to do this we’ll need to dig up the soil, deal with the groundwater and we’ll even be sampling the soil and operating quite a lot of small experiments.”

“The soil from the excavations might be added to the biopile”.
