A person has died whereas being restrained by police following an altercation with a safety guard at a grocery store, sparking a death-in-custody investigation.
Officers had been alerted of the incident with the safety guard at Alice Springs’ Coles retailer about 1.10pm on Tuesday, police mentioned.
Two Northern Territory officers had been within the retailer on the time and restrained the person.
“A short while later, the person stopped respiratory and CPR was commenced,” an NT police assertion mentioned.
Emergency providers arrived and the person was taken to Alice Springs Hospital, however he was pronounced lifeless about 2.20pm.
“A criminal offense scene was established, and the purchasing centre is predicted to stay closed,” the police assertion mentioned.
“The incident is being investigated as a dying in custody.”
Main Crime Part detectives are travelling to Alice Springs, with police investigating the incident on behalf of the coroner.
