At the least 10 orcas that have been seen trapped by sea ice off the coast of northern Japan on Tuesday appeared to have escaped, native officers within the nearest city mentioned Wednesday.

Native officers informed public broadcaster NHK  the coast guard had been unable to rescue the whales, which have been caught a little bit over half a mile from the coast, on Tuesday as a result of the encircling ice was too thick. By Wednesday morning, nevertheless, they may not be seen within the spot. 

“Because the hole within the drift ice began to open, it is possible they escaped,” an official within the city of Rausu was quoted as saying by Japan’s Kyoto information company. They mentioned the animals might not be noticed with binoculars from the shore.

Rausu is located on Hokkaido’s Shiretoko Peninsula, which is designated a World Pure Heritage Web site by the United Nations.
