A suspected nitrate oxide fuel leak in South Africa has led to the deaths of 16 individuals, native officers say.

The victims – together with girls and youngsters – died from fuel inhalation at an off-the-cuff settlement in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

Wednesday’s leak has been linked to unlawful gold mining within the space.

Nitrate oxide fuel is usually utilized by unlawful gold miners – recognized domestically as zama zamas – to extract gold from soil stolen from deserted mine shafts.

One of many fuel cylinders was discovered leaking in Boksburg’s densely populated Angelo shanty city.

The victims had been discovered inside a 100m (328ft) radius of the scene.

Nobody was taken to hospital, emergency service officers have informed the BBC.
